Is life not a thousand times too short for us to bore ourselves?
Friedrich Nietzsche
There are no uninteresting things, only uninterested people.
G.K. Chesterton
If we allow our 'high creativity' to remain alive, we will never be bored. We can pray, standing in line at the supermarket. Or we can be lost in awe at all the people around us, their lives full of glory and tragedy, and suddenly we will have the beginnings of a painting, a story, a song.
Madeleine L'Engle
Bored or Boring?
I do not understand or accept the concept of boredom.
It's crazy to me.
Amazing things surround us every minute of every day. None of us will ever know even a fraction of everything there is to know. We have no business with boredom. I am never bored.
This does not mean I am always doing something. I spend time sitting in a chair, staring off into space. I go on walks and hike without headphones. I often drive without music or audiobooks. I sit on my swing in the backyard and look at the sky (we have a lot of sky out here).
I think it's important to let our minds wander without direction. Most of my good ideas come from this time.
When I talk about boredom, I'm talking about people feeling like they have to have something going on or that they have to be entertained every moment of every day. They get cranky and annoying when they aren't. This is why we can't put our phones down for long before we feel that itch to pick them back up. We've gotten bored with the world.
This is an indication of unhealthiness. No matter where you are, interesting things are going on around you. Being there with a friendly curiosity and a chosen sense of "not knowing" can turn a boring situation into an opportunity for the world to wow us.
