Some of the sneakier side effects of self-absorption are the ideas that every emotion we have matters, that every emotion we have is a valid indicator of reality, and that other people are required to take our emotions into account.
This makes sense. When we spend a lot of time thinking about ourselves, our emotions seem more significant and important than they are.
Here's my caveat to my opening sentence: your emotions are valid in the sense that you are experiencing them, sometimes emotions are a valid indicator of reality, and it's nice to be considerate of other people and try not to inspire negative emotions in them. Please don't send me ugly messages (it hurts my emotions).
